Biography

Nancy L. Cohen is Of Counsel at Ireland Stapleton. She represents lawyers and judges, healthcare and mental health professionals, accountants, and insurance and real estate brokers in malpractice claims, business tort litigation, and regulatory matters. Nancy also handles complex commercial litigation, including real estate disputes and business litigation, and defends clients in director and officer liability claims.

Nancy is an accomplished trial lawyer with more than 38 years of experience practicing in both Colorado state and federal courts, including extensive trial and appellate work. Before returning to private practice in 2010, she served as Chief Deputy for the Colorado Supreme Court Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel. That experience provided her with a deep understanding of the professional and personal stress clients face when malpractice claims or disciplinary matters threaten their livelihoods and reputations.

With a philosophy grounded in trial readiness and close collaboration with her clients, Nancy strives to achieve the best possible outcome in every matter. She is a vigorous advocate who focuses on her clients’ objectives while remaining mindful of the risks and costs of litigation. She understands that, in some circumstances, resolving a dispute before litigation is the most effective path forward.

Nancy also counsels law firms and attorneys on ethics and professional responsibility issues, recognizing that early guidance can often help prevent costly and damaging mistakes.

Committed to public service, Nancy has served as President of the Denver Bar Association and as a board member and past chair of Family Star, an early Montessori Head Start school. She has also served on the American Bar Association Standing Committees on Professional Discipline and Client Protection and taught advocacy skills at the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. In 2014, Nancy was elected to the American Law Institute. She currently serves on the Colorado Supreme Court Standing Committee on the Rules of Professional Conduct, the Colorado Supreme Court Advisory Committee, and the Colorado Bar Association Ethics Committee.

Outside her practice, Nancy enjoys skiing, biking, and cooking with family and friends.
